MOSH OF ASS #9(sic) featured in SHORT FAST AND LOUD #9, released early 2003. About MOA: I started it about 5 years ago as a free demo review zine…I used to scam Kinko’s copies and pass these out for free. It soon became too big for me to do that, so Chris and I decided to make it a feature of SFL. This way it gets out to more people, although now, I can’t send free copies to the bands. Most of these tapes I bought, which is OK for me because I love demos and cassettes in general. If you want to submit anything to be reviewed, please send it to MY Po Box. As long as it’s not racist, sexist or homophobic, and falls under the umbrella of grind/hardcore/straight edge/punk I will probably review it. A warning about the following reviews….I dig most styles of punk, everything from raw grind to New York style HC to even some melodic stuff. So what I might think rips, you may not. Also, I have a certain admiration for new bands and young kids pumping out their first demo, I think it rules and what punk is all about. So I take that into consideration when reviewing something too….Although I might not listen to most of these tapes more than three times ever again (mainly due to volume), I think demo tapes serve an important part in our scene. Top Favs in no Particular order: Radegest Demos Out Of Vogue advance D.H.I.B.A.C - Demo Heartwork demo Surf Nazis Must Die (duh) Lumps-demo Cut The Shit Demo Infected Society/Fate To Hate Split The Kill We Must Burn V/A - Johor Hardcore Compilation Tape Go It Alone - Demo Really good melodic youth crew from Vancouver....nothing out of the ordinary for the style, but its damn good for what it is. Plus they skimboard, so they get a big A+ in my book.....someone needs to start a skimboard core band. markpalm604@hotmail.com Boxed In - Demo This is not the Boxed In from England but a metallic HC act from Osaka Japan. If you are a fan of new school hardcore like Triple Crown style, or the bands that Straight Up puts out, you will dig this. It’s done well, but not really my cup of tea. Atsushi Nakatani, 11-6 Asahigaoka-cho, Suita City, Osaka, 564-0083 Japan Magnum 45 - Demo From Malaysia, M45 play ultra-metal moshcore, with low, screamed vocals and some solos to boot. Something like Next Step Up or something.....lyrics are about inner struggle, war, and death. If you like mosh-core you should check this out. tonictoxic@hotmail.com, or Andiz, Indah Jaya Apartment, Block 11, Lot 10, 3rd Floor, 90000 Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. XAmorX - Demo Hailing from Porte ALegre Brasil, XAmorX play super fast political hardcore with some modern day influences. There are a lot of metal breakdowns and mosh parts, mixed with some really fast hardcore. Reminds me of Backdraft from Holland. The demo comes with a booklet with lots of information, all in Portuguese. Good stuff. A/C Gustavo, Rua Nova N 142 Bairro Santa Isabel, CEP 94400-480 Viamao, RS, Brasil Kill Me Kate - Demo 17 songs of fast raw hardcore/punk (I think every tape has that description)...the music isn’t nec ultra fast, but the lyrics are spit out super fast, with a snotty voice, which makes it sounds that much more intense and frantic. Good stuff...somewhere between The Degenerics and straight forward HC. 4stinson@primary.net Spaul - Fatal Thoughts Demo Spaul has been around for along time...their earlier demos have been top notch, and this is no exception...super fast hardcore (dare I say power violence) recorded on an 8 track.....this is grand stuff for sure! 12 songs in all...the best yet. vinnie@winmarcompanies More Fucked - Demo Dirty raw hardcore punk (with covers of GG Allin you know it) from Chicago....covering all the dirty topics from drinking, crack and kidnapping. Luke, Po Box 1014, Dekalb, IL 60115 Black Box - demo From the central Valley of California comes Black Box, fast punk rock that is raw and political....good stuff. No gimmicks, no fluff, just good straight forward political hardcore punk. 17 songs...with a good recording. laidoff@sonic.net Answer - Demo A pretty blown out recording (maybe live?) of some r'n'r influenced Japanese hardcore...good stuff for sure, but the recording makes it hard to hear what’s going on. Since this tape came out, they have released a CD, so I would recommend hunting that down if you enjoy the semi-melodic, rocking Japanese hardcore stuff. No Address TxAxB - Bring your own Cola Demo Snotty fast hardcore from Wisconsin where all the songs are about TAB cola. I used to work with a lady who drank 6 Tab's a day. Anyhow, their name says it all: Thrash And Burn! Recorded on either a four track or boom box...which is awesome for a demo! wombat112@hotmail.com Fuerza X - California Tour Demo A Tape they made for the tour these guys did last year.....Fast youth crew from Guatemala that is awesome. They will be touring the US in the fall of 2002...I don’t know how these guys can get to the US so many times! I don't know if this is still available, but write em to see what’s new. fuerzax@hotmail.com Force Macabre - Quem Ira Sobreviver E O Que Restara Deles Tape This tape was released in Poland...mixing originals and covers of Armagedom and Massacre 68. If you haven't heard FM yet, they are a Finnish band that is emulating the late 80s Brazilian thrash/metal bands (like Armegedom, duh!). I'm always surprised by this band, and how much they actually do sounds like a Brazilian band, right down to the recording style. Adam, Zapolskiej 23, 41-400 Myslowice, Poland Psychonuerosis - Pro Tape Another tape put out by Adam (who did the Force Macabre tape).....this time around of Psychonuerosis from Poland. Fast crustcore/grindcore that has a strong death metal influence...The lyrics and fold out booklet is awesome, discussing topics like animal rights, poverty, etc. More energy went into this packaging than most LPs. Adam, see address above, Poland Contrataque - Demo This is the Brazilian Contrataque (not to be confused with other bands of the same name)....WHN got to play with them in Belo Horizonte....and they were AWESOME. Super fast sxe thrash with political lyrics. They finished their set with a Larm cover which was awesome. Write em and get this tape! xgaloveganx@hotmail.com No Value - Reh Tapes / Advance CDR Ripping fast thrash from Japan that is just awesome. And although these recordings are from a boombox, you can hear enough through it to tell this band is killer. Reminds me of Slight Slappers! I have two tapes here plus a CDR, and I know they have multiple records coming up, one being a split 12" with Brody's Militia so prepare to be fucked up! Yo-ichi Ueda, 203 Tomioka Bld, 4-44-5 Kuoenji-minami, Suginami-ku, Tokyo 166-0003, Japan Mrtva Budoucnost - Best Shots Tape A pro tape from these Czech thrashers...covering a period from 97-99. These guys were awesome, I first heard em on the split ep with Pangs of Remorse.....If you like very fast crazy hardcore (Disrupt meets power violence) get this. Great lyrics, dedicated people. Filip also sells tapes of old Czech punk rock, so if you do write, ask him about that as well. Filip Fuchs, Grohova 39, 602 00 Brno, Czech Republic Hate Crew - Demo 2002 Hailing from Finland (and not to be confused with Hate Unit from Finland)...these guys, as their name would suggest play some pissed off hardcore. While I was expecting something like NYHC, its actually fast crust parts mixed with a few metal slow parts. Good stuff. Akseli Kahra, Metsakuja 3 D 7, 05460 Hyvinkaa, Finland Runnamucks - CDR(s) These guys are ripping fast Boston HC style from Florida...they have an EP out, plus a self produced CD, but they have various things collected on CDR as well. If you like Gang Green/Jerry’s Kids style fast punk, write em and check it out! Josh, 810 S. Winter Park Dr, Casselberry, FL 32707 Chaotix - 2002 Demo Hailing from Sapporo Japan, Chaotix play fast hardcore not unlike later Ripcord. Ripping stuff. This is a lot better than their first demo, even with the DIY recording on this one. I like this a lot! Takashi Otsuka, c402, 4-1-2-41 Sumikawa, Minami-ku, Sapporo Hokkaido, 005-0004, Japan Fallen World - Demo CDR Whoa....really well done grindcore from Singapore, take a little Carcass, mix it with some heavy political crustcore and you got Fallen World. If you are a fan of grind, check this out. Seelan Palay, Block 856, #04-06, Woodlands Street 83, Singapore 730856, Singapore Littleman Complex-Demo great vocals laid over driving hardcore....no bullshit, straight forward, to the point are all descriptions that pop into my head. Some parts remind me of "Tied Down" era Negative Approach. Great stuff..... Scott Thompson, 1218 W. Hood Ave, Apt. #2, Chicago, IL 60660 Private Ways / Breakfast Split Live Tape Breakfast from Tokyo play crazed skate thrash that is quirky and influenced from some old SST bands....a combo that works. Private Ways could have written the sound track to a few of the late 80s skate videos I watched religious. Its a mix between SST, indie rock....great song writing and good execution. A very interesting tape, get it if you can. makehermine@excite.co.jp V/A - Deranged Freak Attack Comp Tape A collection of already released songs from a gazillion ripping bands, like NINE SHOCKS, MURDER SUICIDE PACT, SPAZM 151 etc. Josh, 315 Melbourne, Houston, TX 77022 The Lab Rats = Start Thinking Tape The tape version of their CD on New Disorder....done on Will's tape label Risk. Great hardcore punk from the SF area...done by kids who have been really active around the area. A touch of youth crew influences, with snotty vocals and some melody here and there. Awesome. Risk, 3649 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94121 RSG - Innocent People...Pro Cassette Hailing from Indonesia, RSG plays primitive crust/grindcore with political lyrics. I think they might have disbanded already, but you can try to write to the address and see if it works still. 20 songs in all. rizal2000@hotmail.com Free Barabbas - Demo Fast death metal that has some rad 80s thrash metal riffs in there. If you told me this came out on Seraphic Decay in 1990 I would have believed you. 5 songs in all, and surprisingly, I really liked this. Drew, 184 Fireside Dr, McMurray, PA 15317-3610 Shackles Await - Demo Ripping hardcore from the Oakies who do Burnpile....good, fast crusty hardcore. Reminds me of either BG or Artimus Pyle. Shackles Await, 201 W. 6th, Edmond, OK 73003 Fork Knife Spoon - Demo BMX graphics galore...you know, I used to hate BMXers since they were like rollerbladers, they would come to the skate spot and fuck everything up, run into people, etc. Now I have a certain respect for them since they have been over shadowed by bladers and scooters, although I have had a few run ins with BMXers at skate parks that left me thinking they all suck. Ok, apart from that, this is good hardcore that has a lot of metallic riffs thrown in and tons of slow intros. Its good stuff though when they go fast, I’m into this. I think I could probably go with these dudes to a skatepark. Conquistador, 2012 11th Street Pl, East Moline, IL 61244 Ill Conduit - CDR Super heavy hardcore that is tuned low. There are some parts that kick into these acoustic parts with singing over em that just annoyed the shit out of me, but it was well done for what it was. If you are into doom metal, doom hardcore like Damad or something, check this out. thebobspeaks@excite.com Basta Basta - Hardcore Demo Good hardcore punk that takes its cue from their home country, Finland (especially in the vocals). Just no bullshit Finnish hardcore punk. Basta Basta, PL 264, 33101 Tre, Finland Secret 7 - Demo This demo made me ask em to do an EP....fast thrash from Singapore. This demo is more punk than their advance, reminding me of Man Lifting Banner or Discarga. While their advance for the EP on 625 is full blown fastcore that reminds me of Ottowa. Check this out. secret_7@hotmail.com Asbest - Man Ka Do Af Det Demo Great energetic hardcore from Denmark....has a little "old school" (whatever that means)...I guess I should say this is pure punk, no metal influences. The recording is straight up BCT tape 1983 material, awesome. Really good stuff, I would recommend writing this band and seeing what they are doing. kvalme@ofir.dk or Klaus Hansen, Prisholmvej 61A, 2500 Valby, Denmark Proletar - Pro Tape Death metal grindcore from Indonesia that has a lot of environmentalist imagery (earth first monkey wrenches, etc), unusual titles for their songs, and no lyrics sheet. Really for fans of grindcore only.... Inal, Jl Tebet Barat Dalam VIII No. 28, Jakarta, Selatan 12810, Indonesia Hate Mail Killerz - The Cardboard Effect Demo These guys have been around for awhile, driving up to the Bay Area to open shows and blow peoples minds....they are truly mind blowing. Super fastcore with some super crazy female vocals...tons of time changes, insane drumming....and all their recordings are home recordings. Truly DIY. Write em and get turned onto some insane shit. HMK, 6676 N. Bendel, Fresno, CA93722 XCrosseyed HateX - Demo A (tongue in cheek?) sxe group from Australia that takes its cue from bands like Our War (lyrics about not taking shit, straight edge, etc...) Good, yet basic sxe hardcore. Sounds like it was quickly thrown together, but judging from the name, it’s a semi-joke band, so that's the desired effect. Po Box 763, Newtown, NSW 2042, Australia Abstinence Pistols - Demo A live recording (from a house party) which is pretty awesome...they start off super mellow and indie rock and then blow into some full blown nuts crazy fastcore....the banter in-between the songs is worth it alone. adamk4@hotmail.com, adam, 19 old pond way, Columbia, SC 29212 All Nation Dead - Neo Imperialism Tape A pro tape from Indonesia's AND....very crazy fast hardcore/crust.....lyrics about class war, etc. The recording, like most demos coming from Indonesia, is recorded rough, but under all the studio echo and fuzz, is some primitive, but good crustcore. Sound Of Anger Records, Jl Karya Utama VII/17 Rt. 013/03, Gandaria Utara, Jaksel 12140, Indonesia D.H.I.B.A.C - Demo This was sent to me by the label who is putting out an EP by these guys....this is EXTREMELY fast hardcore, like taking INFEST and mixing them with a grindcore band. It is fucking AWESOME. The only weird thing is on all the stops, they have taken out the "air" from the recording, so the stops sound artificial. But apart from that (and as long as the EP doesn’t have that effect) this is fucking ripping. Spike Piledriver - 4 track fastcore demo A 2 man semi grind / semi noise band....with lots of great crossover metal riffs thrown in, and the weirdest vocals ever. For noise freaks for sure.... Jake, 94 Gordon Place, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen, AB23 8RB, UK R'N'R - Demolition From the same scene as XFILESX.....good hardcore that has a punk element all the way through (the mid tempo songs have an anthemic feel, and the guitar solos are pretty rockin). Check it out. RNR Records, Po Box 344, Winchendon, MA 01475 Surf Nazis Must Die - Demo Funny, but really good fast punk rock from Germany. Reminds me of a slower NEOS or some DC HC at times.....from what I understand has some members of Highscore. Great vocals too boot....the vocalist sounds like he is 12. snmd@gmx.de Suffer Now - Advance Stuff Songs from a few splits and comps...42 songs of super raw grindcore from this two man band (I believe). Diy and raw as fuck. No Address, but watch for upcoming releases. Cisafat - Demo Total pyscho grindcore/death metal...that is at times a little too ecclectic for my tastes. While most of their songs are super heavy with grind parts, they have other parts that are a have funky riffs, or vocals with effects. It’s interesting, so check it out if it sounds appealing to ya... cisafat420@aol.com Fidos Brunch - Demo 8 songs of hardcore that is like a slower AOD, or FOD.....they are from Japan, but they have an American kid on vocals that sounds like the dude from old Visual Discrimination. Good high energy punk rock hardcore. I believe they had a track on one of the Deny Report comps that was put out in Japan, so keep your eye out for em. mokei@wonder.ocn.ne.jp 2 Minutos De Odio - Demo CDR From Belo Horizante comes 2 Minutos De Odio which play frantic fastcore/grindcore/screamo...all the lyrics are in Portuguese, so I don't know what the songs are about...but the packaging is really intricate and well done. doisminutosdeodio@bol.com.br Blindspot AD - Advance CDR Crazy grindcore that has hints of math metal....if you are into modern grind-tech style you will dig this...some of the metal riffs on this fucking rules...they know what they are doing! Pat Trieb, Ehlersstr. 24, 88046 Friedrichshafen, Germany The Exelar - 8 song CDR Formed from the ashes of DEVOLA....chaotic hardcore that fits into the mold of the Mountain Records style (does that make sense?). A little screamo, complicated structures, but enough of a fast groove that makes it more enjoyable that others of the genre. Might be pressed by the time you read this. The Elexar, 324 Wall Street #5, Kingston, NY 12401 Heartwork - Demo Bad cover art, but man such a good fucking demo! Hailing from Japan (from which city I don’t know) but this is 4 songs of ripping hardcore ala the late 80s metallic japanese bands.....influences ranging from Final Conflict to Motorhead...you get the picture. Great stuff! But unfortunately, no fucking address! Damn! No Address 3 Found Dead - Advance CDR Fast hardcore (do I dare powerviolence) from Australia that has a humorous side. This is recorded really well (intended to be pressed soon) and shows marked improvement over their earlier stuff. A little bit of everything, multiple vocal styles, grindcore, fast snotty punk, hardcore, break downs, quirky stops, etc. Deadmeat@ihug.com.au xBlind To Seex - Sadar Tape A pro cassette from Indonesia of fast, youth of today (later) influenced hardcore...good stuff, a little rough around the edges (get it, edges) but still better than most of the awful right-wing shit we have in the states. blindtosee@angelfire.com Brody's Militia - Demo This tape devastates...as all their stuff does. When I first heard these guys I was blown away, its not wonder that they will soon have a gazillion releases coming up....I'm stoked! Super distorted, no bullshit hardcore punk the way it was meant to be played. Brody's Militia, Po Box 377, Mt Orab, OH 45154 Radegast - 86 and 89 Demo This is just plain awesome. Some of you might be familiar with the book that has recently been published about the Czech punk scene, written by Filip Fuchs....well he made this tape of one of (if not THE first) Czech hardcore band called Radegast...and it rules. The demos are awesome, is somewhere between Die Kruezen and late 80s European hardcore....melodic, raw and just awesome. He tells me they went in and re-recorded all their old songs later on (in the 90s) but that these demos are a lot better. The only thing is, I don't think this is available....so I would try to hunt down the LP if you can. No address V/A - Hruby Punkovy Hlaska - Comp Tape Another from Filip...this is an old comp tape done by an old French tape label called Ukrutnost Tapes...it features Czech bands like A/64, Extempore, FPB, Plexis P.M., Pivni Mozoly and Visaci Zamek......its awesome...spanning the years of 1978-1985. Some of the recordings are really raw (most are live), but it’s some of the best stuff I've heard in along time. Again, the only problem is I have no idea how one would track one of these down....sorry for the tease. No Address Tusk - Advance Heavy duty hardcore with screamed vocals, metallic guitar chords and overall fierce pummeling of the senses. Good, heavy and original Trevor, Po Box 6347, Evanston, IL 60204 Judabota - Demo Super fast hardcore with screamed vocals...hailing from Brazil no less. Some of the songs start off with some super metallic hardcore riffs, but instead of going into a mosh part, it goes fast all the way through. 16 songs in all....a slightly low budget recording, but it adds to the fact that this demo is more enjoyable than most records. judabota@hotmail.com The Mustang Project - Demo French fastcore that has (at times) a strong Charles Bronson influence....mainly from the spaztic approach and the vocals are glass shattering. The recording on this is awesome, low fi enough to be raw and punk, but good enough where you can hear everything going on. Pretty good shit. Rai Ko Ris - CDR Nepalese punk rock! Seriously.....This was recorded back in Dec 2001...and it combines some original rock elements with gruff vocals with some dual vocal action. At times peace punk, at others raw punk, and a times just jamming. Check out the website and contact them! www.geocities.com/raikoris or raikoris@mail.com.np 30 Years War - 3 song demo Whoa, where'd these dudes come from? Only saying that since they are from Santa Cruz and I'm surprised I haven't heard of them before. Chaotic-heavy hardcore that takes a little Deadguy with Converge...but seems more "punk" than those bands (I'm starting to confuse myself now). Solid. Plus I like the psuedo-historical band name since I'm nerdy like that. thirtyyearswar@hotmail.com Draw Blank - Proper Fucked CDR This is AWESOME. From the ashes of Delta Force (a great fastcore band from here) Draw Blank play 5 songs of really snotty hardcore punk that is recorded like the NEO's. This is straight up 81 American hardcore style. Good stuff, now I want to see em live! Akanothing1@attbi.com Brigate Rozze - Demo Good fast Italian hardcore that is somewhere in-between X-Acto and Sottopresione. There are only 3 songs on this, but they are all raging. Dual male-female vocals laid over fast youth crew influenced hardcore...with a touch of thrash. Pierluigi Garibaldi, Via San Marino 14, 00918 Roma, Italy SL-27 - Demo Very discordant modern fast hardcore...along the lines of frantic screamo. One influence is noticeable in the Combat Wounded Veteran style graphics, yet as far as musically, I would mix some early Ebullition style with some modern day screamo. Good lyrics about scene competition and other punk related topics. Stig Koppen, Koekoekstraat 7, 2400 Mol, Belgium Delta Force - Demo This band was awesome...I say was cuz they are now defunct, but at least they left us with a demo and a self produced EP. Fast, raw hardcore punk from the Bay Area that went highly unnoticed. Bummer.... akanothing1@attbi.com Duh Lumps - Demo Ripping hardcore not unlike the Hate Mail Killers.....crazy, frantic, distorted recorded raw as fuck but awesome....this is fucking superb! Write em and get this now. Alex, 2884 Adrian Circle, Hanford, CA 93230 Word Downfall - Promo By naming their band that, they have set some unrealistic goals for themselves.....this is a good demo for sure, fast German grindcore with heavy death metal influences....but its not Terrorizer for sure. If you like your grindcore with modern influences and some tech, than watch out for these guys. www.worlddownfall.de Sharp Knife - Demo Good fast hardcore / punk from San Francisco, that lacks any trace of metal (that’s a good thing now a days). This started as a side band of some Lab Rats members, but they quickly proved that they can carve their own path. Good stuff...get their LP as well! If you email risk, ask him about all the other tapes he has as well! risk@newdisorder.com Looserz - Jakarta Crew Demo Some songs are really fast youth crew, while others are like early 90s style hardcore like the type that New Age and Conversion Records used to put out....They are at their best when they play fast, but the breakdowns mix up the mood of the tape. Check it out... bloodxruns@yahoo.com.au Knife Fight - Demo The band's name has been floating around for awhile since it features ex-members of some pretty known bands....but I won't get into that. Mean sounding HC ala Boston '82 style....not really my cup of tea, but they are damn good at what they do! knife_fight@hotmail.com Get Your Kicks - Demo Super metallic moshcore from Japan...with graffiti writing, super-mega breakdowns and yes, more breakdowns. Not my kind of thing, but good for what it is... No Address Sangre De Los Puercos - Demo Metallic crustcore (ala Deviated Instinct) stuff from New York City...not bad, but still needs some work. I’m positive these guys' 2nd demo will be ripping for sure... sangredelospuercos@hotmail.com We Must Burn - Demo Fucking brilliant fast thrash from near Nagoya........So good that I just asked em to put this fucker out....its fucking full throttle energy through out..no let ups......6 songs of pure thrash mayhem Masaki Tabata, 1-90-2-1001 Jyo-Jyo Chou, Kasugai City, Aichi Pref, 486-0833, Japan. The Kill - Demo Ok, their is bad grind, good grind and then grind like the KILL does...unbelievable grind. This is so over the fucking top fast without being math-metal its fucking great. I was going to do an EP with the band that some of these dudes used to be in (called Open Wound) but that fell through. Well shit, I'm glad they kept rocking cuz this is fucking nuts.......I'm about 6 songs in and there has not been one place where the blast beat has stopped. Nuts. Roby, Po Box 133, Deer Park 3023, Melbourne, Australia Thumbs Up - Demo 2002 The Forever Youth - Demo Raw, high energy fastcore from Grand Rapids Michigan...good stuff. This is the epitome of the great hardcore demo....rough recording, awesome songs, funny samples here and there. I hope these guys continue and record some more stuff. pizzarollking@yahoo.com Jesus Beard - Demo Super low budget black metal grind that is tongue in cheek...but on some of the songs I listened to, they play super fast raw black metal/grindcore...the kind if it was done in 88 that black metal dudes would be knifing other black metal dudes over, but done now a days its just really raw super low-budget grind. I want to hear em in a studio since it’s hard to get a picture of what the band is like from this. severedsaint@hotmail.com Grim Reaper - Demo Fast, dark hardcore from Germany...7 songs in all. At times they have some scando going on, at others they have a Talk Is Poison meets From Ashes Rise thing going on.....most definitely good, and the songs on this demo are more developed and executed than most bands' second or third releases.....songs about religion, and daily fucked up life. Thomas Franke, Boxhagenerstr. 22, 10245 Berlin, Germany Out Of Vogue - Demo These guys have destroyed at every show I've seen em at, and they are putting some life’s blood back into West Coast hardcore punk rock...this is straight up fucking 81 style punk rock hardcore. The songs on this demo are not as good as their advance EP which will fucking smoke for sure. Be sure to watch out for that EP. Out Of Vogue, 4819 Autry Ave, Long Beach, CA 90808 Morte Asceta - Demo Holy shit....3 songs of Talk Is Poison / Life’s Blood style hardcore from Brasil that has more rock, solos and power than most bands I've heard....it will be a 7" soon I think, so please watch for this...it is fucking beautiful. Cx postal 1860, 80011970, Curitiba PR, Brasil Overpowering - Advance CDR Super fast hardcore that reminds of their Spanish compatriots All Ill......they have some songs on the newest Reality Comp Lp so check those out. I think they use a drum machine but I’m not exactly sure since I’m heard some triggers that sound exactly the same....but its just too on to be a human. That’s the only detraction. ovrpwrg@mixmail.com Race to Die - Demo Solid PA hardcore that has a heavy metal influence (ala Slayer or Unbroken or something). Its well executed but is a little too middle of the road for me. no contact address Career Suicide - Live on CIUT Stephe from Equalize Distort burned me a CDR of Career Suicide playing on his radio show at its pretty damn good...straight forward hardcore punk ala Boston or DC back in 81. Good shit! I don’t know if this is available, but write to the band at.... marfar@telus.net The Pac Men - Unauthorized Demo 11 songs of fast paced hardcore punk that is anthemic and high energy....good shit. There's a cover of INFEST's sick-o as well... radiost8@escape.ca And the Sky Turned Red - Demo Raw fast metallic hardcore from Texas......From the letter they included, they write that their scene is mainly metallic HC and that, although they do have a strong metal influence, they stand out like a sore thumb for playing fast. Lets hope they keep it up! brian_noname@hotmail.com Dead In The End - Demo Ack....these guys just broke up too and I never got to see them. Fuck! 4 songs of fast youth crew done by youths for shits sake....great shit man, I was so stoked they were from SF and were so young.....write em to see if they have these demos available still. XxdeadintheendxX@hotmail.com Bedebah - Pro Tape I get a ton of weird metal tapes from SE Asia...everything from power metal to black metal to god knows what. I get these tapes that have the high gloss covers, with some photoshop cover of demons, and flames, and old english logos and stuff...I love it man. This demo is well written, DIY death metal/black metal that is quite good for the genre....If I was (still) into this style of music, I would turn my attention to SE Asia cuz it seems this is where the true spirit of DIY underground metal still lives.... Homeless Crew, Po Box 49, Ujungberang 40600, Indonesia G.I.G - Pro Tape Fast metallic hardcore/crust/grindcore from Indonesia.....25 songs in all, and pretty well done. The vocals are super high pitch and annoying which I think is awesome..... For death metal fans only though. ae5@ae5.org or http://id-nh.com Collision - Demo This collision (since there are a few out there) are from Holland and play technical death metal mixed with hardcore and grind.....Can't get into some of the lyrics (like 'Big Breasted Bimbo'). tammi3000@hotmail.com Maggot Colony - Demo DIY death metal/grindcore band that has some punk elements as well.....good stuff if you are into the genre. maggotcolony@msn.com Umin - CD Ex Chimpt (who I liked a lot) and ex-Sizlak...from Philly...good, raw, grindcore/fast hardcore (reminds me of a more metal No Less at times). Umin, Po Box 721, Frazer, PA 19355 Extreme Hate - Demo Grindcore from Indonesia which is done really well....8 songs in all, one of them being a Napalm Death cover. Write em at: grindforkids@yahoo.com Preto Velho - Demo Awesome fast hardcore from Belo Horizonte in Brazil...very original and well executed, a mix between strained screamo and just straight out fastcore. Really well done, and if you can, write em and get this, Preto Velho, CX Postal 1350, CEP 30123-970, Belo Horizonta - MG, Brasil. Disidencia - Demo All I have to say is this is awesome. I met one of the members when he was visited Los Angeles, and he gave me this. I've been steadily plugging the band since. Fast, aggressive, yet melodic hardcore from Uruguay that reminds me of X-ACTO from Portugal. Positive, political and pissed. Good stuff.... propioesfuerzo@hotmail.com Encompass and Stalemate - CDR Intricate bass and drum jamming, basically boiling down to some prog with slow dirgy doom parts. Good stuff for sure, so if you are into this sort of thing (the most prog I get is about MITB), this is really well done, and is recommended. I believe this will be released soon on CD. statutorist@aol.com When We Die - Six songs in under 12 Minutes CDR Aggressive and at time, discordant hardcore...someone in-between Born Against and Time In Malta...but not sounding anything like them. What I mean is that the new breed of complex hardcore that takes in multiple styles might sound different to one another, but you can here similar approaches and nuances among them. This, on the other hand, stands out with some really rocking parts, which might turn some people off, but made When We Die stand out. I dig it...even if its ecclectic. Redundant Audio International, 500 S Congress Ave, #225, Austin, TX 78704 Anondyne - Tour Demo CDR First off, this comes in a sheet metal silk screened cover, crazy...the songs contained are ultra-intricate math metal style hardcore...Early Hydra-Head style is prevalent for sure. Good stuff, yet a little out of the realm of what I’m listening to these days. But if you are a fan of this style, jump on this, cuz its good...damn good. monkeyvsrobot@hotmail.com 1-2-GO! Crew - Walk Together Rap Together CDR Word has gotten around on these guys....a rap group from Minneapolis that takes youth crew lyrics (well, there's a SHAM 69 set in this too!) and sets them to beats (some self made, some from classics like Slick Rick, etc). Well done, and will probably see some vinyl or full length material soon. Six12crew@hotmail.com Hades Mining Co. - Demo The song titles say it all "Vomit Omelet," "My feces, your sandwhich" Will Breaker - Demo Another band from New Paltz! An intricate intro busts out into some really fast hardcore. A good combo of modern HC styles (metal), fast hardcore, and old school (whatever that means). Basically what I should say is this is a good hardcore band that blends styles. www.willbreaker.cjb.net Infected Society / Fate To Hate - Split Tape Fast, simplistic fastcore thrash from Moscow....yes, Russia! Awesome! The guitars might be slightly out of tune, the recording a little rough, but this is awesome. Reminds me of the old LARM tapes...the only funny thing is a song called "no to porno" with a porno sample before it. retarded@fromru.com Mass Seperation - Ignorance in Breed Demo These Malaysian grindcore fiends have been around for awhile, and have released a few CDs (one split with Atrocious Madness and other out of Ohio). This is the first demo from 99, recorded really raw....for fans of extreme grindcore crustcore only. mass_seperation@hotmail.com Brag-flashlamp- Split CDR A 6 song CDR of fast grindcore of the new school Brutal Truth style fromGunma, Japan. Good stuff if you are into really well played and intricate death metal influenced grindcore, plus its recorded really well. Write em at..... N10mgn@hotmail.com All In Deep Shit - HIV Positive Youth Demo Fastcore from Australia that is simple and straight to the point. Reminds me of early Bronson or Spitting Teeth at times....I just received their advance tape for an upcoming EP and it shows a marked improvement...its really good. Just fast, high energy hardcore. Write em and see if the Ep has been released yet. Moshfactor 10 Records, 208A Whatley Crescent, Maylands, Western Australia, 6051 Australia (punksforprez@hotmail.com) BTA- Demo I have no info on this demo, except the tape and the envelope it came in. Good aggressive fast hardcore from Ohio...Its a demo, so its recorded on a boombox, but you can hear everything going on, and from what I can tell...its some frantic fast thrash. Jason Crase, 716 Beechwood Ln, Milford, OH 45150 Deathbag - Demo Good raw hardcore with some snotty vocals...at times it reminds me of Born Against mixed with fast crustcore. Lyrics about daily life, religion, etc. John, 10 Beech St, Ilion, NY 13357 Elektroduendes - Demo Fast punk rock with female vocals...anthemic choruses, reminds me of a (better) Naked Aggression. Nothing mind blowing, but the songs are really well done, and the vocals are perfect. Jar Kore Records, AP 137-030 CP 09291, Mexico DF, Mexico Faces of Death - Demo This is fucking majestic. Fast hardcore punk that is recorded on a four track for that extra blown out feel. These guys were around for about 2 years (maybe more?) and consisted of members that were either setting up house shows, playing in other bands (like Dystrophy) or just coming out to support every single show. The last show that I saw them at consisted of blood, 4 bags of flour, feathers from a pillow and some of the best punk rock I'd heard. Damn. If you are looking for a comparable, I would say Gordon Solie. sirthrashalot@hotmail.com StabaCadaver - Demo Good fast hardcore (dare I say the word power violence)....their fast parts remind me of Charles Bronson while they play some slow parts that remind me of Crossed Out. Tongue in cheek lyrics add to my liking of this. StabaCadaver, 255 Fawn Lake Forest, Hawley, PA 18428 Acme - Demo No, not the one from Germany, this is the Japanese band...a melodic intro starts this which then leads into a heavy mid tempo riff with harmonic guitar leads....really well done, so if you like the new school japanese hardcore stuff, you should write em Satoru Nakamura, 103 Yokoyama, 1-4-8, Haramachida, Machida-si, Tokyo, 194-0013, Japan Fleshies / The Jocks - Split Tape The Fleshies flat out rule..seeing em live is awesome. Rocking hardcore that is executed so well....If you want a reference, they have a few records out. The Jocks are pre-Lab Rats/Sharp Knife and thinking that this music was made from punks who were around 15 years old is amazing. At times pissed off, at others melodic....just fucking pure punk rock. Write Risk and ask for a catalog. risk@newdisorder.com Conga Fury - Demo This is fucking full blown fast Japanese hardcore thrash....not super fast, not metallic, just great hardcore punk. Their CD is already out on Six Weeks, but I would write to them to see if this is available cuz its fucking great. Hamada Eri, 403 MK Bld, 10-14 Kutanda, Kochi 780-0832, Japan John Hillerman - Bringin It Down Demo Hardcore punk from Germany that is really fast at times, moshy at others. A bad cover of an Agnostic Front song too boot. Jan Rohlk, Teltower Str. 12, 51377 Leverkusen, Germany Find Him And Kill Him - demo 6 songs of fast thrash from San Diego..this demo is quite old, they have a few records planned so watch out for those. moontanchild@home.com Hit Me Back - Demo It will be hard for me to be unbiased on these dudes cuz I absolutely love them. Super high energy hardcore from East LA with an awesome front man (abraham). If you get a chance to see em, see em. If you get a chance to write em for demos or upcoming records, write em! xhitmebackx@hotmail.com Living Under Lies - Adv Tape Great hardcore from Oregon with a franticness that separates LUL from others. They have a certain Prank sound, leaning more to the Talk Is Poison side of things...but still heavy and dark. These songs are for their split with Books Lie that has been around for awhile. David, 6627 N. Congress Ave, Portland, OR 97217 Mortal Combat - Demo From Indonesia, MC play fast grindcore/crust...which seems to be pretty popular in Indonesia judging from all the Indonesian tapes this issue. Well written riffs make this stand out from the rest...plus the vocals are just so high and blown out. humandepravity@yahoo.com V/a - Banned In Nagoya Tape Can't remember if I reviewed this before, but what the hey, its a great tape comp. This includes One Line (awesome youth crew), District (high energy youth crew), Nine Curve (fast crossover) plus Unleash, Furious About, and Linkage. Great tape comp...get it now. Depression Records c/o Hiroyuki Karaki, Nishimido Yotutuji-5, Hagiwara, Ichinomiya, Aichi, 491-0365, Japan The First Step - West Coast Tour 2001 Demo These guys are pretty well known, but for those of you who haven't heard em, The First Step play really well written youth crew. Their EP is awesome, this tape is awesome. I have yet to hear anything from these guys that is less than awesome. One side not is we had a rad show down in LA where we mixed youth crew with thrash with: Champion, The First Step, Lie, Scholastic Deth and Reagan SS. I wish there were more shows like that since it was rad to see everyone rocking to everyone else. check out the labels website at: www.livewire-records.com Cyness - Industreality Demo Super fast political grindcore from Germany...super awesome, I’m surprised that these guys aren't fucking huge from how awesome this demo is. Super low tuned, but still technical, and incorporating tons of time changes. Write em at: Cyness, Fr.-Engels-Str. 53, 14482 Potsdam, Germany The Punpees - Demo Super fuzzed garage 77 punk from Japan. Super snotty vocals over a mid tempo, catchy, anthemic punk rock. The recording is super blown out, but that’s what makes this enjoyable. thepees@ezweb.ne.jp V/A - Johor Hardcore Compilation Tape A tape version of a CD comp that includes Malaysian crust, grind, peace punk and hardcore bands like Argon, Depress, Parkinson, Reconstruct and Semerepang....and awesome way to get turned onto some great hc/punk from Malaysia. There is a huge scene there, so take a chance and order some tapes from that area, you will be pleasantly surprised. The label who put this out has also put out a lot of other tapes too, so ask for info. Broken Noise,(brokenvision@hotmail.com), or post at: No 12 Jln Lembah 24, Tmn Desa Jaya, Johor Bahry, Johor, 81100 Malaysia. Extreme Decay / Parkinson Split Tape From the same label that put out the Johor Comp Tape....Extreme Decay play dual vocal crustcore/grindcore....which is rad.....political lyrics, DIY approach, good grind. Parkinson play a more loose form of grindcore with high pitched vocals....but they have these slower peace punk elements that show up here and then. All the lyrics are in Malay, but judging from the graphics, I think they are of the punk norm (war, back stabbers, etc). The tape itself comes with a two color fold out lyric sheet with a separate cover...recorded (as all Broken Noise tapes are, on a pro tape). Broken Noise, see address above. Cinder - Demo 2002 Fast hardcore from Spain that has a touch of youth crew...but reminds me of X-Acto...just good old skate influenced fast hardcore. The recording is either on a 4 or 8 track, which makes this sound awesome. 8 songs that are kicking... Cinderxhc@hotmail.com Organ! - Demo From the ashes of Only Ten Between, Organ! departs from the OTB style and goes for a MITB (maybe I’m saying this because of the bass being so upfront) meets freak-out screamo style....its really well executed, with tons of noise, feedback and whatnot going the whole time. I'm really interested to hear more from these dudes. Organ!, 515 Morton Dr., East Moline, IL 61244 Mayombe - Adv Tape This is a little late on the review because their EP is out....but WHN had the honor to play with this new band from Brasilia Brasil when we were there....ripping fast hardcore with some of the craziest female vocals ever. The whole Brasilia crew was so awesome that I can't think of anything to say but GET THEIR EP NOW. Brazilian hardcore is fucking blowing up. Leonardo Gomes, CP 2480, Brasilia, DF 70849-970, Brasil. Apathetic Youth - 2 Demos So I’m throwing their first demo and second demo into one review. Let first off start out by saying that I am stoked to see all these new West Coast bands coming out..bands like Out Of Vogue, Apathetic Youth, Sharp Knife, Dystrophy, Faces of Death(rip), Hit Me Back, Find Him and Kill Him...there are so many new awesome bands, and AY is right at the front of this boom. Their first demo is recorded a little rawer, but is still awesome. Super fast hardcore that takes a little power violence and mixes it with just straight up fast hardcore.....you can hear a little Despise You in some of their songs (Inglewood!). Their second demo is what just floored me.....they have been playing around and just dropping people's jaws........write em, get this, support em and watch out for future releases of these guys....my 2nd demo CDR is limited to 13 so nnnyyyaaaaaahhhh. ayiwhc@yahoo.com Dead Fall - Demo While this demo is a little rough on the edges, their live shows, and their recently released EP are awesome. Fast hardcore from San Francisco that has gone pretty much undetected by the larger Bay Area scene....write em at. deadfall_hc@hotmail.com Toshiro Mifune - Demo Crazy fast all over the place grindcore that is somewhat math metally...its just ultra frantic and crazed. Only a few slow riffs to catch your breathe with. They have a release on Six Weeks already. No address, sorry. Catchy punk rock that has melody but has enough of a raw edge to keep it high energy. Anthemic, yet gruff vocals adds to this immensely. Sorry, no address. Gleaming The Cube - Demo Fast hardcore punk that has some awesome skate riffs thrown in there (ala Faction - hell they even do a Faction cover). Only a few metal influences here and there...Good stuff....just good old, no BS skate punk rock. GxTxCx@aol.com ManDown - 5 Song Demo Youth crew (or should I say, youth crew influenced hardcore) that has some fast parts thrown in here and there. Some shouted choruses, breakdowns, good vocals...lyrics about how desk jobs suck (I can relate to that one), etc. mandownhc@hotmail.com It Takes All Kinds / The Young Ones - Split CDR ITAK mid tempo political punk rock that reminds me of Naked Aggression (they do a cover of NA at the end)....The Young Ones came through SF this past summer and fucking blew me away...Really good DIY hardcore punk rock (a little more hardcore than ITAK). Both bands(and the label) have a lot to say about DIY, punk rock and social issues, so this stands out for its emphasis on ideas and communication. Punks Before Profit, Po Box 57, Olean, NY 14760 Kursk - Mobilization Means War Demo From the name alone I had emailed Ben and talked war history with him...which was pleasant to say the least! Kursk is known as the biggest tank battle in history which pitted the tanks of Russia and Germany against each other. Ok, enough nerd shit....3 songs of raw hardcore that is fast and crusty, the recording is really rough, but if you dig your crust raw, this is for you. Good stuff! Sink Fast Records, Po Box 675, Flagstaff, AZ 86002 Mamasnake - Shizuoka Local Extreme Attack Demo WHN played with these guys in Fuji City, and they were awesome...4 songs of fast metallic hardcore songs that are over in a matter of seconds. Yuichi Takei, 1801-7 Ohoka Numazu-City, Shizuoka 410-0022, Japan Circle X - Demo Really fast hardcore that is really original and melodic at times....with really snotty, punky vocals. Kane Hara, 1-20-6-202 Asahi-Cho, Machida Tokyo 194-0023 Japan Street Guerilla - 2 song Demo Fast crusty thrashcore from Gunma....while the song structures are a little repetitive, the riffs themselves are strong and remind me of stuff like DEFECATION or RIGHTEOUS PIGS. Good stuff.....I bet their next release is going to be awesome. Realities-of-war@docomo.ne.jp Ayashii Tsumori - The Blood Demo At times heavy, at others fast and discordant....with a cover of ST's "Memories of Tomorrow" thrown in. Good solid heavy hardcore from San Jose of all places. The production is really good, and clear, which might not be the best thing for this style of tunes. ayashii_tsumori@hotmail.com Blueprint for Disaster - Demo CDR 17 songs of really tight grindcore (or death metal influenced hardcore) from Portland...the packaging reminds me of Discordance Axis (dvd case, scenic pictures of the ocean) but the music is more straight forward than DA (which I enjoy). Just a 3 piece (guitars, drums, vocals) and pulled off like pros. Good shit check it out if you are into grind. blueprint_for_disaster@yahoo.com Venal IV - Demo Awesome political hardcore from Montana...some fastcore influences, some metallic, with lyrics about the FCC, School of the Americas and others. If this band was from the Bay Area or the East Coast they would have had records out years ago....that’s the beauty (and some would say the scourge) of the Midwest....non-hyped great hardcore can still be found there....done DIY because that’s the only way to do it there.....write em and check it out. venaliv@beer.com Vol 4 - Poodlecrusher Demo Super fast raw DIY grindcore/power violence that reminds me a lot of Godstomper....infact, these dudes are drums and bass as well.....the drumming is fast, and the bass is raw, so if you are into super raw DIY grindcore, you will dig this....
